    Foundations for a home extension

The foundation is one of the most important technical choices in a home extension, especially on Dutch clay and peat soils.

A good foundation keeps the new extension and existing house moving together. A poor choice can lead to cracks, settlement and expensive repairs.

The right solution depends on soil, loads, existing foundations and the size of the opening into the house.

    Soil drives the decision

Sandy soils often allow simpler strip foundations. Clay, peat and reclaimed land can require piles or other measures to reach stable bearing layers.

This is why the same extension can cost more in parts of the Randstad than on sandy ground in other regions.

    Connection to the existing house

The new foundation must work with the existing structure. If the existing house is on piles, the extension usually needs a compatible solution.

Large openings for sliding doors or open-plan kitchens can also add steelwork and point loads that affect foundation design.

    Avoiding surprises

We assess soil expectations, existing drawings where available and the intended load before finalising the quote.

When uncertainty remains, it is better to price the foundation transparently than to hide the risk in vague allowances.

    Summary

Foundation choice is not a detail. It should be checked early because it affects budget, design and long-term quality.
