    Prefab vs bespoke extensions

Prefab and bespoke extensions both work well, but for different homes and priorities. The right choice depends on shape, finish, speed and design freedom.

Prefab is not automatically cheap, and bespoke is not automatically better. The best choice depends on how standard the shape is and how much freedom you need.

This guide explains the trade-offs so you can compare options without getting distracted by labels.

    When prefab makes sense

Prefab works best for straight rear extensions, garden offices and layouts with repeatable dimensions. Factory production can reduce on-site time and improve predictability.

It is especially attractive when speed, low disruption and a clear scope matter more than architectural freedom.

    When bespoke is better

Bespoke construction is stronger when the existing home has unusual dimensions, a protected style, complex openings or specific material details.

It also gives more freedom for roof shape, facade composition, floor levels and integration with the existing house.

    Cost comparison

Prefab can be more predictable, but only if the scope is complete. Compare foundation, transport, crane work, internal finishing, glazing and service connections.

A bespoke quote may look higher at first but include more of the work needed to finish the space properly.

    Summary

Choose prefab for repeatable shapes and speed. Choose bespoke when the home, style or layout asks for more design control.
